• Portland South Primary School

• St John’s Lutheran School

Portland South Primary School has a 'Reduce - Reuse - Recycle' program which has not only been implemented but is rigorously being observed and patronized by all students, staff and families. They have reduced land fill and have innovative uses for products which would otherwise not be recycled in new and intelligent ways such as the waste paper tree/plant system. Tree planters, paper bricks, paper logs are also products that have been made entirely of recyclable items.

• Portland North Primary School

Portland North has set sustainable goals and targets for the motivation of staff, students and the wider community to care for the environment and take learning out of the classroom and into the field. The outdoor classroom is innovative and exciting link to all areas of the school curriculum.

Proudly we offered funding for eight Grade 5 students and support staff to attend the 2009 Junior Landcare Victorian Youth Environment Conference in Lorne on August 4th and 5th 2009.  The school presented two workshops during the conference about renewable energy resources in the Portland area.

The school shows a strong commitment to sustainability.  The school shreds paper and then uses it to make paper bricks, uses food scraps to feed chickens and for compost, are a collection point for mobile phones and cartridges and in general encourage all students and families to care for our wonderful environment.

St John’s is a member of the Portland and District Sustainability Group, as well as the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative.
